Seed Library

Augusta County Library’s Seed Library encourages the tradition of seed saving, the cultivation of locally adapted plants, and community connection. Seeds are free to take — and we hope you’ll return some when your plants go to seed. Seed Library collections are available at all seven Augusta County Library locations.

How It Works

Checking Out Seeds

  • Select up to 3 seed packets to take home
  • Fill out the seed library log with your information and the seeds you are taking
  • Plant your seeds — and if possible, let some plants go to seed and return a portion to the library

Seeds are arranged alphabetically by common name — beets, carrots, tomatoes, and so on. Some varieties may be grouped under a general classification, such as collards listed under “greens.”

Donating Seeds

Want to give back? Seed donations keep the library growing for everyone.

  • Pick up empty seed packets at the Seed Library
  • Fill out the packet with as much information as possible: seed type, variety, growing season, year collected, growing location, and any tips or notes
  • We ask that you provide enough seeds to produce at least three plants
  • Place filled packets in the appropriate section of the library

Seed donation guidelines:

  • Seeds must be dry and clean, separated from the plant and free of debris and insects
  • Seeds must be labeled with type, variety, year collected, and any other relevant information
  • Seeds must be from your own property or harvested with permission from the property owner
  • Seeds must not be on the Virginia DNR list of invasive species
  • Seeds should be free from pesticides

Augusta County Library reserves the right to use, decline, or dispose of any seeds that do not meet these criteria.

Why Save Seeds?

Seed libraries support communities in meaningful ways. They foster engagement between neighbors, promote self-sustainability and healthy eating, and help preserve our agricultural heritage for future generations.
